Comments were provided by Gabriel Sister, partner with TozziniFreire, after attorney Daniela Thompson Martinez of Dannemann Siemsen Advogados opened the seminar with a talk on "Tax Incentives for technological innovation", which looked at the main tax incentives available under legislation known as Lei do Bem, the requirements to be met in order to obtain these benefits, and the difficulties facing companies in this respect
Staging sports events requires investmentsin several areas , such as construction, hospitality and catering, public transportation, airports, etc. On this premise, Eduardo Pugliese, partner with law-firm Souza, Schneider, Pugliese e Sztokfisz Advogados, spoke on "The 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics: tax incentives as stimulus for infrastructure investment". Comments were provided by Adriana Stamato of the law firm Trench, Rossi e Watanabe.
After the break, Eduardo Silva, senior manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers, gave a talk on "Zona Franca de Manaus - special taxation regime" and examined the main aspects related to tax incentives under the taxation arrangements for the Manaus Trade Zone, focusing particularly on incentives involving VAT (locally ICMS) and excise tax (IPI). Edinilson Apolinário, also a senior manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers, provided comments.
"Fiscal war between states- benefits relating to ICMS", a talk by Adriana Stamato, closed the seminar. With comments from Eduardo Pugliese, the discussion was on certain state governments that provide tax benefits to attract investment to their areas and others that curb this practice, leading to the adoption of rather negative measures for taxpayers. The purpose of this talk was to discuss these measures and how companies can prepare to deal with them.
