A. D. Little's November 2009 study "Global and Regional Headquarters in Switzerland" makes several observations on why Switzerland attracts FDI and notes where improvements can be made. While the country has increased its overall competiveness, HQ relocations are down due to global economic conditions. These conditions, however, have made the federal and cantonal tax systems attractive and enable Switzerland to compete with the world's most attractive counties.

The report states that between 2003 and 2009, 269 headquarters transferred to Switzerland. Of these 54% are from the U.S., 29% from Europe, and the balance from Asia and elsewhere. Of the U.S. headquarters 23% are EMEA, 31% global and 46% European.

The A. D. Little report cited six reasons given for choosing Switzerland as an HQ location: economic competitiveness, an attractive tax system, highly qualified labor, a central location with excellent infrastructure, quality of life and support from administrative authorities. The report noted that improvements can be made in terms of labor law flexibility, availability of qualified labor and affordable accommodations.
