Innovation in times of crisis The word innovation depends on a precise definition and, even then, is defended and used by various social groups. Similar to other concepts like globalization and sustainable development, it is practically a consensual term, considered by many as the plank of salvation of all problems involving technology and economic growth.
Mario Fernandes

Disincentive towards innovation in the pharmaceutical sector Recently, the Grupo Interministerial de Propriedade Intelectual - GIPI (Interministerial Group of Intellectual Property), associated with the Ministério do Desenvolvimento, Indústria e Comércio Exterior - MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade), made a protest against the protection, by a patent, of inventions of "according to medical use" and of polymorphic forms. Specifically, the MDIC is against the inspection guidelines of the Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial - INPI for the concession of patents for this type of invention.

Ten years later... Brasil, a country of contrasts, where poverty, prosperity, and wealth live unashamed side by side. Where slums seem to flow like a torrential river down the hills towards the city streets;, streets that are too busy to hear the clamor of adults and children, whose perspectives for a better future fall through when colliding with the wall of violence, lack of sanitation and deteriorating health and educational systems, all on the brink of a breakdown. A country that is becoming part of the global economy and the group of economically-viable and ascending nations while sinking under the screams of the hungry, the homeless, and the hopeless, who are unable to see a better future.
Carlos Roberto Hohl
