But have you ever thought about your virtual water consumption, that is, consumption of water used to make the products you buy?
According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), the agricultural and animal husbandry sector is leader in water consumption, using up to 70% of all fresh water available in the world. Industrial companies come in second place with 22%.
A study of the World Water Council showed that 150 liters of water are used to produce one kilo of bread. For one kilo of potatoes, between 100 and 200 liters are consumed, while one kilo of rice requires 1.5 million liters. Producing one kilo of beef requires between 13.5 thousand and 20.7 thousand liters of water.
Therefore, before deciding on whether to buy a product, environmentally conscious consumers should analyze their sustainability, stimulating companies to adopt environmentally sound practices and make the necessary investments to promote water saving and reuse methods.
Simple actions such as deciding what to consume and what not to consume can make a big difference in terms of the negative impact caused on the environment.
This issue of the SWISSCAM magazine focuses on the planet’s water resources, their importance for life, and different techniques developed to promote rational use of water.
It is necessary to raise awareness on this valuable resource and get the involvement of citizens, the government, and companies. Have you done your part today?
